Hi, I’m Ben, a qualified person-centred counsellor with a wide range of experience. I’m also registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) so you can feel assured that I’m practicing safely and ethically with the right skills.

Counsellor Ben Payne

Counselling is my way of being and it feels like an absolute privilege to do it. I have always described the way I feel about counselling as that moment in the film Billy Elliot when Billy describes dancing as being like electricity. This is how it feels to me and it is incredible to use a spark to help people grow in the therapy room.

My role is to listen attentively, offer empathy, and provide unconditional positive regard—meaning I accept you as you are, without judgment. This helps to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and supported, allowing you to explore your emotions and discover your own solutions to life’s challenges.

You set the pace, and we work together to gain insight and foster personal growth.

I fell in love with the person-centred approach created by Carl Rogers from the moment I began studying it. I also enjoy making a difference though making positive connections and with counselling, the relationship between you and I is key.

This form of collaboration and empowerment is a huge part of who I am.

I’m extremely lucky to be delivering private counselling in partnership with The Movement Centre in Oswestry which provides a confidential space for clients.

I also feel incredibly privileged to work with Lingen Davies Cancer Support from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where I support adults acting as a carer for someone living with cancer. This includes family, a partner, friends or another close person. You can find out more about this work here.

Away from counselling, I love volunteering including for the Teenage Cancer Trust, King’s Trust and for Love Button, a charity connected to the band Coldplay. I’m also a massive fan of live music and I’m always in awe of the natural beauty around me, which inspired many of the images on this website as well as my logo.
