If you’re considering person-centred counselling, you may be wondering what to expect during a typical session. The person-centred approach is unique in that it prioritises the therapeutic relationship and emphasises a safe, non-judgmental space where you, the client, lead the way. Here’s what you can expect during a session:
1. A warm, welcoming environment
From the moment you step into the therapy room, you’ll be met with an atmosphere of warmth and acceptance. Person-centred counselling is grounded in empathy and unconditional positive regard, which means I will create a space where you feel valued, respected, and free from judgment. This helps you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and emotions openly.
2. Active listening and empathy
Throughout the session, I will focus on actively listening to you. I won’t interrupt or offer quick solutions but will allow you to express your feelings and experiences fully. I will listen with empathy, understanding your emotions from your perspective, which helps you feel truly heard and validated.
3. No direct guidance or advice
Unlike some other therapeutic approaches, person-centred counselling does not involve me offering direct advice or solutions. Instead, the focus is on helping you explore your own thoughts and feelings at your own pace. My role is to offer support, reflect back what you’ve shared, and encourage self-discovery, rather than telling you what to do.
4. Self-exploration and reflection
During a session, you may find yourself exploring past experiences, current challenges, or future aspirations. I will sometimes ask open-ended questions that encourage you to reflect on your emotions and thought patterns, allowing you to gain insight and clarity.
5. A collaborative relationship
Person-centred counselling fosters a collaborative relationship where you have control over the direction of the session. You’re encouraged to set the pace and bring up what’s most important to you. Over time, this approach promotes self-awareness, emotional growth, and healing.
In essence, person-centred counselling provides a supportive, client-led environment where you can explore your feelings, gain insight, and take meaningful steps toward personal growth.
